List,

One of the members of our PD support group called me tonight
to ask a question about a drug call Baycol that she was
taking for cholesterol reduction. She had a fair amount of
trouble with the drug and it was recalled. After
discontinuance of the drug she began to experience Parkinson
symptoms and has been diagnosed with PD recently. Some info
on Baycol is listed below. I noticed that it may have
produced high concentrations of iron and muscle related
problems. Any body else had any experience with this drug?
Any PD connection?

Baycol

Rhabdomyolysis has been associated with the use of
cholesterol-lowering statins such as Baycol® and Lipobay®.
Rhabdomyolysis is a muscle disorder in which muscle cells
are destroyed and the byproducts released into the
bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream, these byproducts are
carried to the kidneys where the body's filtration system
operates to cleanse the blood.

Cellular destruction to skeletal muscles generally results
in the release of myoglobin into the bloodstream. Myoglobin,
because it contains iron, can, in excessive concentrations,
occlude or clog the pathways of the kidneys, and lead to
kidney failure and eventual death. Compounding this kidney
distress is an associated shift in the body's vital fluids
from the bloodstream into the muscular system.
Rhabdomyolysis and its severe effects are what reportedly
caused the 31 deaths associated with the use of Baycol® and
Lipobay®.

Symptoms of rhabdomyolysis include:

abnormal urine color - usually dark red or brownish;
muscle pain, weakness and/or tenderness; fever; nausea;
vomiting; general malaise.
Muscle pain, weakness or tenderness often occur in the
muscles of the lower back and the calf (leg) muscles.
However, any and all muscle groups can be affected.
