Our young (on-set) support group was derived from a large, mostly older
group of Parkinsonians. The 3 or 4 couples met in each other's homes
just to share what was happening with their Parkinson's. When the group
got a few more couples interested we moved to a church, and we've been
there 7 years. The location is more or less centrally located. Because
we are a small group - we had a "large" group of 21 at our last meeting -
a very comfortable "Adult Lounge" can accommodate use. The meeting room
is on the first floor and parking is practically right out side the door
with restrooms just down the hall. If we need a room with tables, we can
use one of the Sunday School rooms. We also can use their VCR. The only
negative thing about our meeting location I guess is that they ask that
we give a "room use" donation. I feel that the positives far outweigh
that one negative. Something interesting about our "young" group, which
after 7 years is getting older, is that our mailing list numbers about
25 couples. On the average our meetings number 10 people. We call our
members maybe twice a year, and though they may not come to the meetings,
they all want to be kept on the mailing list. I think it takes time for
the younger PWP to feel he is ready and can benefit from a support
group. Younger support groups also seem to be few and far between. One
of our regularly attending couples drives 2 hours to come. Another one
drives almost 1 1/2 hours. We have as many living outside the city
limits as live within. Now i have to be on my way. I'm taking a plate
of baked goodies and the "room use" donation to the church secretary!
