one paper talks about the possible neuroprotective action of green tea.

"Two Congress presentations and one new paper explore the ability of gene microarrays to track gene expression changes in PD models. A constellation of 51 specific genes is reported to change in expression in both the MPTP model and the 6-OHDA model. Change in expression of many of these genes is counteracted by administration of apomorphine, both the S form used as a dopamine agonist and the nonsymptomatically active R form, and this counteractivity is correlated with neuroprotection in both models. Finally, the green tea polyphenol ECGC is shown to be a powerful neuroprotectant that affects many of these same genes. Together, these results suggest that common genetic pathways act in both models, and that interrupting these pathways can be neuroprotective."

From a web site on green tea I have extracted the following:
"The leaf and bud of the camellia plant are the basis of both green and black tea. Unlike black tea, which is fermented, green tea is steamed dry immediately after harvesting, which leaves it with larger amounts of polyphenols. It's most effective polyphenol is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Most of the benefits of Green Tea consumption appear to be preventive in nature. It is not known exactly how much you need to reap the potential benefits, but four cups a day or more may be required for benefit.

Decaffeinated green tea does have the same amount of EGCG as regular green tea. Check your local health food store for decaffeinated green tea capsules. Depending on the brand, one capsule can supply as much EGCG as four cups of tea."

So for what its worth - why not drink some green tea?
