Melanie- Good luck in your search for a new doctor. I am 48, female, children ages 18 and 20 and have lived with this disease for 18 years. I can relate to you in many ways. I have had brain surgery (DBS/STN) and I can again function with this PD. I recommend you look for a neurologist who is a specialist in Movement Disorders. You can go to "Ask the Doctor" at the NPF site: http://www.parkinson.org/ He seems to recommend Parkinson's specialists in the area in which you would live. You may have to travel - you may not. It's important to have a specialist! (IMHO) I also found an insatiable desire to learn about what was happening to me by reading. There wasn't that much around 10 years ago, but there is now! An excellent book to read is "When Parkinson's Strikes Early" by Barbara Blake-Krebs and Linda Herman (both of whom are list members!) I also enjoyed "Saving Milly" by Morton Kondracke (her husband), which describes what happens when Parkinson's strikes with other complications. (warning: it does describe an aggressive progression and I found it rather sad yet inspiring at the same time). One book every PWP should read is an oldie but goodie, "Parkinson's A Patient's View" by Sidney Dorros. (Can you guess I used to be a reading teacher??) You will find lots of support here as well as GOOD ideas. Welcome!
