Here is something of interest to this thread. It comes from a friend
who is a doctor in Mass. and an advocate of alternative medicine:

A recent study published this week in JAMA (journal of the AMA) --
extremely reputable -- examined a teatment to prevent progression (or
development) of AMD (age-related macular degeneration).

AMD is a leading cause of visual impairment and blindness in the U.S. --
1.7 million Americans have some intermediate or advanced AMD, and 100
000 are legally blind from it.

This study evaluated the effect of antioxidant vitamins and zinc
supplements on AMD in 3640 participants, all over 55 years old.
There was a statistically significant reduction in the odds of
developing AMD, and a reduction in progression of AMD.

The supplements consisted of:
Vitamin C 500 mg
Vitamin E 400 IU
beta carotene 15 mg
zinc 80 mg as zinc oxide
copper 2 mg as cupric oxide

Many multivites cover this. Be careful not to overdo any of the amounts
(except vitamin C).
