Congratulations to list member Anne Rutherford, who along with Susan Calne, R.N. recently received the Mimi Feutl award from Parkinson Society Canada. The recipients were honored for "providing compassionate, responsive care and helping to Ease the Burden" and for making a difference in the lives of PWP. Article is from: Canada NewsWire November 22, 2001, Thursday 6:45 PM Eastern Time SECTION: DOMESTIC NEWS HEADLINE: Volunteers Making a Difference in the Lives of People with Parkinson's DATELINE: TORONTO, Nov. 22 "For more than 20 years, Mimi Feutl, former Director of Patient Services with the Parkinson Foundation of Canada (now Parkinson Society Canada), provided compassion, energy and a commitment to making a difference in the lives of people with Parkinson's and their families. To honour her profound respect for the unique needs and dignity of each person with Parkinson's, the Mimi Feutl Award was presented this year to Anne Rutherford and Susan Calne, RN, at Parkinson Society Canada's annual general meeting in November. When Anne Rutherford (who refers to herself as a "Parkie") arrived in Newfoundland from 'the mainland' in 1988, she found there were no support groups available for people with Parkinson's. So she set up a display at a local health fair, collected a dozen names and an avalanche of changes began. Since that day, with on-going help from husband, John, Anne has compiled an incredible list of achievements - establishing two support groups, helping set up the Movement Disorder Clinic in St. John's, starting a Parkinson exercise class, the Newfoundland & Labrador newsletter and a variety of special educational events. She even had a second telephone line installed in her home to 'lend an ear' and provide information about Parkinson's to people in Newfoundland/Labrador. Anne used to travel across the province with a group of health care professionals to share her experiences in day-long seminars. Those who know her well say she is frank, down-to-earth and a walking encyclopedia on Parkinson's who is always willing to share her knowledge. Although she has slowed down a bit in the past few years, Anne continues to share advice and support with acquaintances across the world on the Internet, and fight for the rights of people with Parkinson's. Susan Calne was trained as a nurse in London, England. When she arrived in Canada, she became the Clinical Coordinator of the UBC Movement Disorders Clinic and developed a program for patient education and counselling. In 1987, she was the first nurse appointed to the Board of the then Parkinson Foundation of Canada - responsible for Patient Services. She implemented Clinical Assistance and Outreach programs to ensure a team of clinical nurse specialists would be equipped across Canada to provide highly specialized care to thousands of people with Parkinson's and their families. With these nurses, Susan developed and published the Parkinson's Impact Scale, a tool to measure quality of life in Parkinson's patients. She wrote patient literature, planned the Foundation's scientific conferences and, in 1998, coordinated the X111 International Congress on Parkinson's Disease in Vancouver. Susan's handbook, "Taking Charge" has become essential reading for anyone with Parkinson's. In spite of a hectic schedule, she always finds time to volunteer at fundraising events for Parkinson's. A caregiver said recently Susan's dedication to the relief of suffering is combined with an extraordinary gift for presenting her broad academic knowledge in a way most lay people can understand. Parkinson Society Canada salutes Anne Rutherford and Susan Calne, RN - for providing compassionate, responsive care and helping to Ease the Burden; Find a Cure for people with Parkinson's across Canada."
