A joint project between Durham County, Cathedral and University Libraries funded by the British Library Co-operation and Partnership Programme, Pictures in Print has sorted, conserved, organised, boxed, catalogued and digitised our separate holdings of early printed maps and topographical prints of County Durham (roughly up to the 1860s - pre-OS and widespread use of photography), creating the basis of a union catalogue on the WWW. The project web site is at http://www.dur.ac.uk/picturesinprint/ where there will be (when I finish writing it) a full account of the project, and is a link to the database with some 1,600 items catalogued. Nearly all the map images are now available (it has taken ages to piece them together). The zooming technology requires a browser plug-in which only works with Netscape/IE on a PC platform, and which you may have trouble installing if you have a tightly controlled PC network but the rest is standard. Any comments will be most helpful - notifications of mispelling, misattributions and other mistakes will not be taken amiss, as checking is still going on. In the tradition of announcing new web resources, please expect it to be broken by the time you look ... -- # Richard Higgins # Durham University Library # Archives & Special Collections # Palace Green # Durham # DH1 3RN # E-Mail: [log in to unmask]
