I stayed there a couple of times several years ago (when I was commuting to
work here) and can recommend it. It's not great, but it is clean and safe.
The River North area refers to a section of town across the Chicago River
from the loop (where the Palmer house is). I'd say it's only a 20-25 minute
walk from the Palmer House and city buses ($1.50) will get you most of the
way in a few minutes (it's 12 blocks north and 3 blocks west of the Palmer
House). The River North area has no end of restaurants and night life. My
take on it is that this area is pretty safe in the evenings, and there are
plenty of cabs if you want to take them instead of walking.

Subject: Cheaper hotel for 4Cs

Hi everyone!

If you're going to the 4Cs this year, Marcy has found an alternative to
the Palmer House that is much cheaper. It's the Best Western River North
Hotel, which is about a mile from the Palmer House.

Here's the web site:
http://www.valuetrips.com/BW/CST/BWILRN.htm

Marcy didn't book through the web, but got a good rate anyway. Here's
the contact info:
125 W. Ohio St.
Chicago, IL 60610
Phone: (312) 467-0800
Fax: (312) 467-1665
Toll Free: (800) 727-0800

The rates are $92/night for Wednesday & Thursday, and $119/night for
Friday and Saturday. There's a 14.9% sales tax. (Marcy figures that it
will be $244.00 each for four nights when we split the cost. The Palmer
House is $175.00 per night for a double room.)

I thought that if a few more of us used the same hotel, we could share a
cab back at night. (I plan to walk the Magnificent Mile in the day
time....)

It would also be nice to see some of you before the Canadian Caucus
meets-- there never seems to be enough time to talk over dinner.

Janice
