hi all
one of the plums in the pudding which is my mass-media-gone-missing life
is discovering the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's
Radio One for the first time
last night i listened to:

LIFE, DEATH AND DISABILITY, Part Two
For many in the disabled community, the murder of Tracy Latimer
represented
a "better dead than disabled" attitude. Issues such as quality of life and
end of suffering are seen by many in this community as just new wrappings
on the old idea of eugenics and race betterment. Writer and activist Dave
Hingsburger brings us the voices of people with disabilities: scientists,
doctors, ministers and activists as they talk openly about the quality of
their lives and who should determine what's good for them.

"my mother told me (18 years after the second trimester of her pregnancy)
over coffee while visiting me at college that she should have aborted me"
"i have obnoxious parents - they taught me that i was loved as i was, and
that i could do anything i wanted to do"
"legs - why would i want to have legs?"
"if being disabled was so horrible, the 56 million disabled people in the
usa would all be committing suicide - it would be raining suicide - but it
isn't - and why not? because we like our lives and want to keep on living
them"
as i said somewhere else recently,
it is not the fact of our physical limitation
it is our perception of it
