I am not surprised that they wish to "avoid controversy"d.

This is the organization that for years refused to publicize the Heimlich
maneuver as a first step in helping drowning victims, at a time when Dr.
Heimlich himself was desperately trying to get the word out. (FInally, he was
successful and I believe the RC now recognizes and advocates this procedure.)
Everything I have heard about them suggests they are an overly bureaucratic
organization that lets internal, petty concerns get in the way of good
practice and good science. Let that $50,000 (not exactly a princely sum
anyway) go to an organization that puts research first.
