> Following are two session paper calls of interest for readers of this
> list:
>
> Performing the Elizabethan
> Queen Elizabeth's court used performance to define and aggrandize the
> Elizabethan era, while her subjects used performance to comment upon her
> policies, her person and the state of England during her reign. This
> panel will focus on performance events that represented the "Elizabethan" or
> commented upon the nature of the era. Topics may include performances for
> the Queen, such as those featured in progress entertainments or Accession
> Day festivities, the Queen's performance of herself in such situations,
> or other performances at which the Queen was not present, such as those held
> in private residences or public playhouses. This may include performances
> that comment on a specific event, policy, or aspect of Elizabeth's reign or
> performances that comment more broadly on Elizabethan society, politics, or
> religion. Papers may examine visual or poetic imagery, audience/performer
> dynamics, the physical conditions of performance as they relate to an
> Elizabethan theme, or any other relevant aspect of a performance event.
> Please send abstracts or completed papers to Paulette Marty (University
> of Wisconsin-Madison) 637 S. Dennis Ave., Decatur, IL 62522 by July 31,
> 2002.
>
> Elizabeth and The Faerie Queene
> Central to Spenser's poem is the presence of Queene Elizabeth, who
> Spenser describes in his letter to Raleigh as the "glorious person of our
> soueraine the Queene, and her kingdome in Faeryland." This session
> proposes to explore Elizabeth's role, both literal and figurative, in
> Spenser's imagination. Given that her kingdom is in Faeryland, to what
> extent is Elizabeth "really" present in The Faerie Queene? How is she
> represented, and how is that representation either controlled by her or
> used as propaganda against her? What role does The Faerie Queene play
> historically in her reign? Possible papers could address Elizabeth's
> other fictive representations and how they relate to Spenser's. Please
> send abstracts or completed papers by July 31st to John Pendergast,
> Department of Language and Literature, Southern Illinois University,
> Edwardsville, Edwardsville, IL, 62025.
>
> Deadline for all submissions: July 31st, 2002.
