Dear Helen,

My disease has not progressed to the point of needing DBS at this point. No, to the Kaiser question. My insurance did not require a referral; I simply called and made an appointment. My doctor is Mark Baron (spelled with one "r" but pronounced the same as "Barron"). I love him. He is very kind and makes you believe that he genuinely cares about you. A very rare quality in a doctor. He sees patients only on Fridays and is in research the rest of the time. His practice is limited to movement disorders and he is indeed a specialist. I have been dealing with PD only one year and am just beginning to have some symptoms that may be the PD, other than the tremor in right hand, which is being controlled for the most part by Mirapex. I have had no complications from that. I was taking Artane which caused severe side effects.

The people you initially talk with at Emory are typical....I won't call names! But when you get beyond the reception area, you know you have come to the right place. I highly recommend it.

I have a son and daughter-in-law in San Francisco. We haven't visited California in a while...or any other place for that matter! We are, for the moment, raising a grandson, now 16 months old. I'm not sure if it is my age (57) or the PD but this is very hard!

Please let me know if you make an appointment at Emory. It is so nice to communicate with a person who has my same concerns.

Mary Jo
