It sounds as though it was to him, Bob.
I used to teach my students that a word is like a human.  It is
born(etymology)lives, breathes and grows as we do by its use and its
responsibilites(parts of speech).  Over hundreds of years it developes a
reputation  that can be ameliorative or pejorative.  Its attitude and
personality can change often over its lifetime just as ours can.  Though it
lasts so much longer than we do, it can eventually disappear from the
language.or be valued for its wisdom and experience and be referred to as it
represented its time in history(archaic).  We, in turn, become a  memory.

It's amazing how a simple word can have such an effect upon our lives!
