Hi Jane-- Just curios--who was your neurosurgeon At OHSU??? My sister (age 40; Dx at age 28) had DBS at OHSU 4 years ago. I am very sorry to report that this surgery was a complete :failure" in terms of any relief from presenting symptoms for her. As time has elapsed, we have often thought that perhaps the surgeon did not place the electrodes EXACTLY where they should have bee. We procurred the Xrays from OHSU, which showed where the probes where implanted--and sent them another reknowned DBS specialist in Toronto. In his practiced opinion, this was indeed the case. The damamge is done however, in that my sister wil NEVER undergo another brain surgery-- in her own words. I must also share that several years prior to the DBS she had a pallidotomy at OHSU with very good results-- but of course, the results were not permanent-but gace her a much needed respite. In any event--you might even know my sister-if you go to any of the Young ONset PD support groups out there. If you'd loke to email me persoanlly, we can she more about all this. She is now in an Assisted Living Facility in Portland-after more than 3 months hospitalization to totally retitrate all meds. She now presents with both significant physical AND psychiatric (PD drug-induced) symptoms. Since the ALF staff now totally controlls her meds, she is doing as well as can be expected now.
