At Penn State, teachers of technical writing courses often conduct service learning projects in conjunction with the Leonhard Center Technical Writing Initiative (LCTWI). The LCTWI is run by grad students in the English department who find local businesses and organizations that need technical writing work done, and then set them up with tech writing instructors. In the past, students have prepared pamphlets for University Health Services, manuals for environmental organizations, sewing instructions for 4-H group projects, and so on. The website for the Leonhard Center is http://www.eec.psu.edu/lc/, but unforunately there isn't much information on the technical writing component. If you'd like, I can give you the contact information for the director, Jodie Nicotra.
