Paula,
I have Norton anti virus program. Its symbol is right on my desk top.I
click on it just like any other program and the properties of the
program get displayed. Among other things it gives me a choice of a
LIFE UPDATE and /or SCAN. Again under the SCAN option it gives me a
choice if you want to scan the entire computer or particular file etc. I
like Norton very much, it is so easy to follow a menu. After the scan is
completed which may take 1/2 hour or so, the status of the scan appears
with indication of a number of files scanned and if virus was found. You
can also get to your particular program if its symbol is not on the
desk top through control panel. I scan any download individually before
opening up the program. Paula, I do not know if I explain it well, but I
hope it helps you to visualize.
Emily
