Human cloning research remains possible as issue over ban splits Senate
31 May 2002Proposed legislation standing before the US Senate regarding the
restriction of human cloning has been delayed due to a lack of support. The
two camps remain divided with one bill proposing to allow only the cloning of
embryos and the other committing to outlaw cloning altogether.Whilst the
Senate has been unable to agree on the extent of a cloning ban, the division
may actually result in greater research into the subject. The failure of any
ruling to be passed has left few limits preventing cloning studies taking
place. It is thought that some pharmaceuticals and certain biotechnology
organizations could begin the funding of cloning research as a result.

The Biotechnology Industry Organization has indicated that there are already
a number of groups involved in this research, such as Geron and Advanced Cell
Technology. These companies recognize that with the Senate unable to reach a
collective decision they have more time to illustrate the benefit of cloning,
through the development of treatments for diseases for example.

The US could be left in a much more liberal position on this controversial
issue, unlike the stances adopted by Britain and France. According to the
Financial Times, individual US states may well be forced to pass their own
legislation governing cloning.
