Limited term lecturer position: The Centre for Writing-Intensive Learning (CWIL) invites applications for a full-time limited term lecturer to participate in the development and implementation of writing intensive (WI) courses across disciplines in the Faculty of Arts at Simon Fraser University. The CWIL is a newly established free-standing centre attached to the Dean of Arts office. It has a mandate to assist departments and faculty on a by-request basis in the teaching of writing, in course/assignment design and in the implementation of writing as a means of learning. Initially, the lecturer will assist the Director in what will be a 'start-up' situation of developing departmental contacts, identifying individual needs, selecting appropriate materials and serving in a consultative or collaborative capacity with faculty. The Centre's goal is to pilot work with faculty in six courses in the Spring 2003 semester. As workable models of consultation and collaboration emerge, the Centre will expand its personnel and services. The ideal candidate will have expertise both in teaching writing and in teaching others to teach writing; will be ready to develop instructional materials and provide training and mentoring to faculty, TAs or others who have a role in the teaching of WI courses; to implement methods of monitoring and assessing the outcomes of WI courses to determine their effectiveness; and to modify instruction and training in response to assessments. Preferred qualifications: an advanced degree, preferably Ph.D., in the fields of composition, rhetoric, discourse analysis, or related fields; experience working in a writing centre and with professional development of instructors; and successful experience in teaching academic/university writing. A willingness to work collaboratively in a flexible and emerging situation with all the attendant ambiguities is a must. Term: two years with the possibility of renewal. Starting date: September 1, 2002 or by arrangement.
