E.S. speaks with the zeal of a missionary and that, to me, in a scientific discussion, is suspect. No one has to believe what I have reported; look at the neurosurgical literature. Chiari I malformation has become a large "enterprise" because of the fact that the anatomical variant aspect of the condition is being seen frequently due to the number of MRI scans being done for cervical spine problems. We rarely found Chiari malformations in the "old days" because the tests (angiograms/myelograms and air studies) were so nasty that one didn't do them unless there were significant clinical findings to justify putting the patients through the tests. Indeed, some Chiari malformations can cause all of the symptoms (except fibromyalgia, which I, and many others do not believe is a "disease") reported by E.S.; but the mere finding of the anatomical abnormality on a scan does not indicate a surgical approach.
