Dear All:
If one want sto cure Parkinsons and related neurological disorders, the
following things are in order:
1. understand the mechanism of the disease progression
2. stop or retard the progression of the disease.
3. try to regenerate the dead or dying nerve cells.
At least with regard to PD, we sort of know what might be going on:
progressive degeneration of neurons.
We at least have some agents that are known to retard this progessive
death of neurons: Co Q10 (?), Mirapex and Requip.
If only we can make these cells regenerate some how, may be via
production of new neurons by differentiation of new stem cells, our own or
transplanted stem cells, this would be the next significant step in finding
a cure for PD. However, there was a lingering doubt in the scientific
community that if the nerve cells can be regenerated at all. Now
researchers Elizabeth Gould and Charles Gross, in an article in Friday's
edition of Science report that new neurons grow an attach themselves to the
cerebral cortex. Check:

Now one has to wait for the identification of factors or conditions that
will achieve this process in vivo.
