After talking to my neuro's nurse yesterday, I decided that maybe celebs with PD don't have the greatest life. After all, they are the people in the limelight who can and do overdo the Sinemet, etc., in order to function in the limelight. Certainly, Michael J. Fox has, which is why he has dyskinesia so bad. Perhaps if he had come out of the closet earlier, he wouldn't have had to do that. It's hard to say, given that every PWP is unique and has a unique set of symptoms and treatment. On the other hand, I agree that it's a bit difficult to look at the celebs with PD and all the care and gadgets and meds that money can buy. Right now, I'm looking at the possibility of being unemployed in the near future due to layoffs at work. How on earth I'm going to be able to pay for my meds (around $400 CDN/month) I don't know, because I won't have extended health care to cover this cost. One of the things I thought about when I read this thread about Janet Reno and Celebs was Dr. Lieberman's recent book. He has celebs discussing their family members who have (or had, if deceased) PD. There are people in there like Dick Clark, the wife of Jim Backus (aka Thurston Howell III or Mr. Magoo), or Christine Lahti (from Chicago Hope). We need people like these too to help out our cause. While they do have all of the money, etc., they also know first hand what it's like to care for a PWP. Maybe we should start lobbying them to lobby the government on our behalf. And, yes, we should also become minor celebs in our own right. Look at Barbara Krebs and Linda Herman. They've done lots for us. A little brainstorming on our part might help us come up with some really good ideas TOGETHER rather than each one doing a little thing in our own separate corners of the globe. What do you think? Want to try? I'm game. BTW, has anyone heard of "Porridge for PD." Somebody told me about this fundraising event but I don't know much about it.
