Neuro diseases do have a very negative effect on life as we used to live it. You see I was diagnosed with Parkinson's during a period of time that was stressful. I was the primary caregiver to my oldest son , with ALS. he very bravely accepted his disease that took him from an active business life and driving race cars to death in three and one half years. He
died at 40 years old.

Bill never complained about his condition, accepting help with grace. As his body quit responding in every way possible. He enjoyed life everyday and lived it fully. Watching races on TV, he would relive the experiences of driving the courses and comment as to the steering and shifting patterns. Even when he could not breath without aid and could hardly eat, he inspired a high school team to win a state championship. Three days before he died, as I prepared him for sleep he said "Dad I'm getting tired of this shit". The only negative thing in many months.

So compared to that turn of life I consider my Parkinson's a trial, but bearable in many ways. Yes I have a progressive disability and with the help of the family, good doctors and the pharma companies I will continue until the curtain closes. I have learned by example that you are not your body. It is only an instrument and sometimes not a good one. I will step up and go down swinging with any strength I have left.

Regards, Bill Lawless
