Hello All, Dear Pat.
My wife, Bodil, got her DBS 19th. of feb. this year.
Just a little background.
We are living in Denmark and her Parkinson started about 25 years ago.
18 years ago she had to say goodbye to work and hello to a weelchair.
She had a lot of fatique, stiffness, slowly movements and worst of all some
very painfull dystonia which could last up to 6 to 8 hours, and they came
nearly every night, if we were lucky only once, but often 2 - 3 times.
8 years ago I was paid from the local authority, so I could stay at home and
work as her caregiver, it was a very good solution for us both.
The decision operation or not is a hard one, but the harder Mr. Parkinson is
the easier is the decision.
The day of the operation started at 8 o'clock in the morning with the offer
of the day: A free haircut. It was a very long day, I looked at the watches
once in a hour, and every time the hands had only moved 5 minutes, but at
last she came out, and already at that time I could feel that the tension in
her toes were gone.
To day we have got a new life, Bodil is walking around, as much as 3 miles a
day, it has been hard to get the muscles to work again, but it is getting
better every day.
She can take our grandchild up and give her a hook.
We have again been able to go to wedding and birthdays in the family.
There has been a good deal of adjustment, but every time with a better
result, still sometimes we think it could be better, I think it is part of
human nature if we get 90% better then the 10% after a time tends to be 100%
so it is important to remember how things were before the operation a diary
is good for that.
We have had to face other (luxury)problems, for example I have been alone in
the kitchen for many years, and placed the things were I think it should be,
but now, where Bodil is taking the washing - up or even making the dinner,
everything get new places.
We have been happy with the operation every minute since it was done, but
the final decision is a personal one, hope this can help you to make the
right decision for you.
The company who make the device gives a lot of information at:
www.medtronic.com

Best wishes
Bodil and Georg.
