I am interested. At my small community college there is an ongoing discussion about how we can better prepare our ABE (adult basic ed) students to make the transition into our career or university transfer programs. I'm especially interested in this focus on the career goal since my proposal (in collaboration with Sharon Josephson) will look at how "the worker" is constructed within typical communications/tech writing textbooks. Tracy Punchard >>> [log in to unmask] 01/20/03 10:12AM >>> Hello, everyone. I am a recent addition to the CASLL listserv and would like to submit a proposal for the Inkshed conference. Since the context in which I teach communication skills is likely very different from anyone in an academic setting, I'm wondering if my context would be of interest to you. For the last eight years, I have been teaching adult high school upgrading in a college in Edmonton. The students bring with them personal contexts which include backgrounds characterized by low self-esteem, poverty, abuse, learning difficulties and health issues. They are then expected to establish a career goal to be eligible for Student Finance Board educational grants and to take only those courses which will advance them quickly towards that goal. We then slot them into the appropriate English course, which is based on the Alberta high school curriculum, which is literature-based and written for 15-17 year olds. You can probably already see how some of this impacts the context in which I teach reading, writing, listening and speaking. Interested in hearing more at the conference?
