hi,

i'm looking for information about the rate of progression about physical
symptoms of parkinsons. my grandmother has had parkinsons for quite a
while, and was doing quite well until a recent case of pneumonia, after
which she lost a lot of mobility--walking became impossible without a
walker, always stands on her toes and is real hard for her to push her heels
to the floor. before that she was slow when walking around the house, but i
hadn't noticed much that was awkward about her gait.

what is the usual case (if there is such a thing) with physical symptom
progression? do they progress slowly/rapidly? if progression has been
slow, does progression accelerate in bursts at times, or does the rate stay
mostly steady?

also, does anyone have any experience with extended hospital stays and their
effects on mobility? for instance, if you are in a hospital bed for 3-4
weeks, would the lack of activity increase muscle rigidity or atrophy?

thanks a lot for any information,
archie
