In our county in California, there is a program called Mountain Caregivers.
The purpose of this program is to help provide respite care for caregivers
who care for anyone with a brain impairment. A similar subsidized program
may be available in other counties and is connected with County Adult
Services here. There is also a program funded by the county that will send
someone into the home of anyone over the age of 55 for a free home safety
assessment. They make recommendations as to equipment needed (especially to
help prevent falls) and provide the recommended equipment free of charge.
This includes such items as transfer benches, shower/tub benches, grab bars
(including installation), reachers, foam padding for the edges of hard
furniture, non-skid tape for tubs and showers, night lights, elevated toilet
seats, etc.

There are various programs out there but sometimes it takes quite a bit of
research to ferret them out.
