I agree with Linda Herman's position that, as long as the "political" discussion relates to PD, it should not be considered out of bounds. Who can deny -- or fail to see -- that the eventual success of therapeutic cloning will depend to a great extent on gov't. support --funding, resistance to legislation against t. cloning, and acknowledgment of the distinction between t. cloning and reproductive cloning. Pres. Bush's position that "ALL human cloning" must be banned does not discourage the interpretation that t. cloning is included in any ban. After all, it does involve human cells. We should not just hope the pesident's intent is to ban only r. cloning. We should prevail upon our congressional reps to themselves understand the distinction, and then to make certain any legislation takes such distinction into account. It should be clear that the cloning issue is, among other things, very much a political matter. And it is one which has relevance in the List. Let's just be sure the tone of our correspondence is civil.
