Last Tuesday I attended a conference where a lawyer discussed Social
Security Disability. For anyone considering applying for disability, here
are some points to remember:

Almost 70% of people applying for disabilily are rejected - expect to be
rejected. Immediately appeal the rejection.

Apply for SS disability (SSDI) *as soon as you no longer work.* Don't
wait - you will be penalized because the longer you are not paying into
Social Security, the further your compensation will be reduced.
Furthermore, Medicare won't kick in for 24 months after you receive SSDI -
unless you have AIDS or ALS. If you don't apply for SSDI within 5 years
of leaving work, you will no longer be eligible to apply.

You are eligible for SSI if you have children and resources of less
than $2000 (if you are married your spouses income and resources count -
house, car and furnishings are excluded in this figure). Medicaid is
awarded immediately.

Be sure to give your doctors notice that you are applying for SSDI so
that they will be aware of the paper work coming their way.

When my husband went on Disability after working for 20 years with PD,
his employer and doctors were more than willing to help out with the
process. He was one of the 30% that was immediately accepted into the
program.
