Roberta,Is this amino acid available as a nutritiional supplement? Charlotte Roberta Innarella <[log in to unmask]> wrote:I'm interested in any comments about the following. Of course this magazine does a lot of advertisements for the supplements on articles they publish. Excerpt taken from The Journal of Longevity "Neuroscientist Reveals Blueprint for a Healthy Brain" by Ronald M. Lawrence, M.D. Key Nutrient Supports Brain's Energy "Shuttle" Acetyl-L-carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid involved in supporting the brain's ability to "shuttle" fatty acids into the energy-generating center of cells, called "mitochondria." The brain's mitochondria utilize vast amounts of energy to control thinking, reflexes, memory retention and body movement. Acetyl-L-carnitine not only impacts the integrity of neuronal structure (by regulating the transport of fatty acids) but also may ease some of the age-related structural changes in the brain. A laboratory study published in the Journal of Neuroscience Research is part of a growing body of evidence suggesting acetyl-L-carnitine also supports the brain's release of dopamine (Sershen 1991). (Dopamine is a neurotransmitter in the brain that supports energy and an elevated mood.) In a fascinating trial with 469 individuals ages 60 to 80 at 2 Italian health centers, researchers compared acetyl-L-carnitine with placebo. Over the course of 150 days, the scientists ran a number of tests to monitor participants' physical health and potential benefits to thinking, emotional stability, and behavior. According to the researchers, the benefits of acetyl-L-carnitine were both "immediate and prolonged." In addition to cognitive benefits, feelings of personal distress and negativity among participants appeared to be uplifted with acetyl-L-carnitine (Vecchi 1991).
