The new drug is Abilify (aripiprazole). It is a tranquilizer, with the unique quality of being a partial dopamine agonist. It is indicated for reasons that are different from Effexor. Abilify is a tranquilizer, useful in psychosis and schizophrenia. In PWP, it may turn out to have some utility in controlling hallucinations and delusions, or other symptoms of psychosis - the same indications for which Seroquel (quetiapine), Clozaril (clozapine), Risperdal (Risperidone), or Zyprexa (olanzapine) might be used. Effexor is venlafaxine - an antidepressant. Effexor may also find indication in PWP who are depressed, but not for hallucinations and delusions.
