Jacksonville Business Journal, FL 2:04 PM EDT Monday Michael J. Fox calls on Mayo P. Douglas Filaroski Actor Michael J. Fox's foundation studying Parkinson's disease named a Jacksonville scientist to an advisory board steering its multi-million dollar research efforts. Matthew Farrer of Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville will join the foundation's 11-member Scientific Advisory Board of leading researchers reviewing grant requests and setting policy. Fox, an Emmy-award winning actor, announced in 1998 that he had Parkinson's. Since 2000, his foundation has funded more than $17 million in research efforts. Mayo received two Fox grants totaling $625,000 this year to study how protein deposits in brains may play a role in the disease, marked by uncontrolled tremors. Included in that is $250,000 Farrer received toward developing the first diagnostic test. He joins researchers from around the world. "It's a great honor for me, as well as for my research group and Mayo Clinic," Farrer said. Mayo spokesman Erik Kaldor said the appointment gives the clinic an opportunity to take a larger role in research. Mayo is expecting an additional $60,000 unrestricted grant from the foundation in the near future, Kaldor said.
