Medieval and Renaissance Drama Society Sponsored Session
Kalamazoo 2004
"Itinerant Playing in the Sixteenth Century"

The session is intended to consider itinerant performers
(both dramatic and musical?) on a social level below that of
travelling players under noble patronage, so topics might
well include the use of statutory control measures, such as
the Statute on Rogues, Vagabonds, and Sturdy Beggars, or the
evidence for control by local churchwardens. Contemporary
definitions of 'itinerant' might well figure in the
discussion. It is not intended that the papers be limited
to the British Isles.
