A cataract is an opacified lens. When a cataract is removed, the anterior
[front] lens capsule is removed and the lens material sucked out but the
posterior [back] part of the lens capsule is retained. A plastic lens is implanted
into the "bag" formed by the posterior lens capsule. Often, debris settles on
the posterior lens capsule behind the plastic intraocular lens and clouds the
vision again. It seems like a "second cataract." This is usually managed
easily by a "YAG laser" procedure, which takes about 2 minutes in the
ophthalmologist's office, with instantaneous improvement.
