Program on Parkinson's disease
Tuesday, 9 September 2003

REGION - As part of National Parkinson's Awareness Week a special television program will be shown at the Stawell
Secondary College Wonga Campus Hall tomorrow night at 6.30pm.

A screening will also take place tomorrow at the Ararat North Primary School.

One thousand people are diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease every year in Victoria and more than 25,000 already have the
disease (five times more than Multiple Sclerosis).

Yet Parkinson's Disease doesn't grab the headlines and people with the condition have difficulty getting local access
to information and advice.

In an attempt to overcome this, Parkinson's Victoria has instigated a locally based Satelite television program with
the potential to reach every Victorian.

This is an exciting, innovative and interactive program that will be broadcast as part of National Parkinson's
Awareness Week.

The program gives viewers the opportunity to share the latest information on the disease and the chance to speak to
experts live on the show through telephone and fax.

The point of the special interactive program is to give people with the disease or those who care for them, an
opportunity to glean information on all fronts that would not normally be available to them.

This includes an explanation of what Parkinson's Disease is and how it affects people, the latest research, movement
clinics, the help and support available, products they can buy and positive stories and experiences from other people
who have Parkinson's from all walks of life.

Special guests on the program are Professor Bob Iansek and Professor Malcolm Horne, there will be an introduction from
John Cleese and a special message from Michael J Fox and Muhammed Ali.

There will also be a range of people with Parkinson's disease, as well as from the medical profession and from
Parkinson's Victoria.
