The following is a request to PAN California from Peter Hansell of

the Cal State Senate HHS Committe rerquesting help to ensure that Gov

Gray Davis will sign the followup legislation to the historic stem cell

This is to let you know that Sen. Ortiz's stem cell research bills, SB 322and SB 771, passed the Legislature this week and have been sent to theGovernor. The Governor has up to 30 days in which to act on the bills. We are asking all organizations and individuals who have supported the billsthus far to send letters of support to the Governor. To ensure that theseletters arrive in time to be considered by the Governor and his staff it isimportant that these letters be sent within this week. The letters canbe mailed or faxed to the Governor at the following address: The Honorable Gray DavisGovernor, State of CaliforniaState CapitolSacramento, CA 95814Fax: 916-327-5296Your letters could thank the Governor for signing SB 253 (Ortiz) last year, authorizing stem cell research in California. The letters could stress thatSB 322 and SB 771 will ensure California's continued leadership in stem cellresearch, build public confidence in the research by establishing a minimumlevel of oversight
of the research, and ensure that it adheres to basicethical and legal standards. SB 322 requires the Department of Health Services (DHS), with the assistanceof a technical advisory committee, to develop guidelines for researchinvolving the use or derivation of embryonic stem cells. SB 771 strengthensinformed consent provisions for donation of excess embryos leftover fromfertility treatment and will also facilitate stem cell research byestablishing an anonymous embryo donor registry.
