The UTSC Writing Centre, located within Teaching and Learning Services at the University of Toronto at Scarborough, invites applications for the new full-time position of Assistant Coordinator and ESL Specialist. In the context of UTSC's diverse student population, we seek a writing specialist with expertise in ESL to work closely with the Writing Centre Coordinator on all Writing Centre programs, and to develop instructional and support programs for non-native speakers. The Assistant Coordinator's responsibilities will include one-on-one tutoring with both native and non-native English speakers, developing seminars and workshops, and supervising and mentoring part-time writing tutors. He or she will also work with the Coordinator to develop an ongoing collaborative research program on writing. In addition to these Writing Centre responsibilities, the Assistant Coordinator will coordinate UTSC TA Services, a professional development program of seminars and teaching-related support for UTSC undergraduate and graduate teaching assistants, and will also work with other members of Teaching and Learning Services to develop and enhance a broad range of innovative teaching and learning programs. Qualified candidates will demonstrate the ability to work with faculty as peers, relate to diverse student audiences, and understand the cultural context of writing. They will have undertaken writing-related curriculum development in a variety of disciplines. They will also be sufficiently familiar with AccessAbility services to refer students appropriately. They will really enjoy one-on-one tutoring as well as working with groups of students at a range of levels. They will have a good knowledge of best practices and a clear vision for the role of ESL-specific services within a broader program supporting writing across the curriculum. Qualifications: Ph.D. in a discipline relevant to the position and formal qualifications in Applied Linguistics or TESL, or second-language writing. University teaching experience is essential. Experience with ESL teaching is essential. Experience teaching writing in the Sciences, as well as prior experience in supervising graduate TAs, would be an advantage.
