> IS CRITERION-REFERENCED TESTING THE MISSING LINK
> IN LANGUAGE CURRICULUM?
>
> Presented by

> J. D. Brown
> Professor of Second Language Studies
> University of Hawai i at Manoa
>
> Abstract
>
> This talk will center on criterion-referenced testing and its
> importance to language curriculum development. The talk will begin
> with discussion of the crucial differences between
> criterion-referenced tests and norm-referenced tests in terms of
> purposes, types of decisions, levels of generality, students'
> expectations, score interpretations, and score report strategies.
> Logistical differences will also be discussed in terms of group size,
> ranges of abilities, test length, time allowed, and cost. In addition,
> the beneficial effects of sound criterion-referenced testing will be
> discussed in terms of doing needs assessment, setting objectives,
> testing itself, developing materials, teaching, and program
> evaluation. Curriculum that relies solely on norm-referenced tests is
> truly missing a link.
