Note the new on-line aids for the archdiocese of Canterbury -- a little late for REED Kent, unfortunately! A. It now contains nearly 5.4 million catalogue entries describing archives held in 328 record offices, libraries and other repositories across England. The update included catalogues from 9 current projects. Among them were finding aids to the following archives: * an enthusiast's collection of recordings, writings and ephemera relating to the life and works of the singer Paul Robeson, held at London Metropolitan Archives, from Campaigning London; * archives of the Archbishops of Canterbury (act books, records relating to diocesan administration, and records relating to the Archbishops' peculiar jurisdiction over parishes outside the diocese, including wills and administrations), held at Lambeth Palace Library, submitted through Saints and Sinners; * a variety of archives held at Cornwall Record Office, Bristol Record Office, and West Sussex Record Office, ranging from 13th century estate archives via 18th century theatre prompt books to 19th century maps and pedigrees, submitted by South West Family Fortunes and by Aladdin's Cave in South East England; * parish records held at Birmingham City Archives, contributed by Seven Ages of Man in the West Midlands; and parish records held by the archives services of Bedfordshire and Luton, Hertfordshire, and Suffolk (Bury St Edmunds), contributed by Communities in the Records in the East of England; * the 13th - 20th century muniments of the Cooke family of Wheatley near Doncaster, held at Sheffield Archives, contributed by Broad Acres, Big Houses, Yorkshire People; and the archives of the Sherard family of Stapleford in Leicestershire (held at the Record Office for Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland), including 17th century papers relating to the migration of planters to Virginia and to the Irish Parliaments, submitted by Families, Estates and Communities in the East Midlands; * and the archives of the boroughs of Banbury and Henley, held at Oxfordshire Record Office, submitted by Local Governance and the Community in South East England. Planning for A2A Phase 3 (April 2004-July 2005) is continuing apace: two successful planning workshops for Phase 3 contributors were held in September, and workshop handouts are now available on the A2A information pages at http://www.pro.gov.uk/archives/a2a/projplan.htm. It is expected that all Phase 3 funding applications to the Heritage Lottery Fund will be submitted before the target date of the end of this year, and one has already been submitted. Finally, A2A is marking Black History Month this October through a showcase of some relevant references from A2A catalogues, which can be found on the site home page. A2A is the English strand in the UK archives network: its database at www.a2a.pro.gov.uk already contains the electronic equivalent of over 400,000 catalogue pages describing archives held across England in national, local and specialist repositories and dating from the 700s to the present day. The A2A programme will make a further 300,000 catalogue pages available on the web by March 2004. * * * * * * Sarah J A Stark Regional Liaison Co-Ordinator, A2A The National Archives Kew Richmond Surrey TW9 4DU Tel (direct line): 020 8392 5328 Fax: 020 8487 9211 Email: [log in to unmask] www: http://www.a2a.pro.gov.uk * * * * * * This e-mail message (and attachments) may contain information that is confidential to The National Archives.
