Learning about essential tremor

Saturday, October 18, 2003

Essential tremor is a debilitating neurological movement disorder that has been mistaken for Parkinson's disease and
more than 120 other disorders.

More than 10 million Americans suffer from the incurable disorder, characterized by uncontrollable shaking, typically
in the hands, head, neck and voice.

Some neurologists speculate research will develop effective treatments for the disorder, which struck the late
Katharine Hepburn.

The average age of onset for essential tremor is 45, but it may affect people of all ages. As many as one in five
people older than 65 have the disorder.

Research indicates that each child of a parent with essential tremor has about a 50 percent chance of carrying the gene
which causes the disorder.

Support groups and networks are available to those with essential tremor.
