Houserockers Play Benefit Concert Saturday, November 8, 2003 They might sometimes be taken for granted locally, but on the Jersey Shore, Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers are almost royalty. Last Saturday, the band headlined the first of two Light of Day benefit concerts at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, N.J. According to Houserockers guitarist Bill Toms, after four songs Asbury Park native son -- and longtime Grushecky pal -- Bruce Springsteen joined the band onstage for a set that included "Code of Silence," "Johnny 99," "Murder, Inc.," "Pumping Iron" and "Everything's Going to Work Out Right." Actor Michael J. Fox also joined the Houserockers and Springsteen onstage for "Light of Day." The benefit shows, organized by Grushecky's manager, Bob Benjamin, raised more than $100,000 for the Parkinson's Disease Foundation and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. A double-CD released last month, "Light of Day," features covers of Springsteen songs by the Houserockers, Elvis Costello, the Clarks, Pete Yorn, Patty Griffin and Graham Parker. Proceeds from the album will benefit the Parkinson's Disease Foundation and the Kristen Ann Carr Fund, which helps fight sarcoma, a rare cancer.
