Tiffany: Finding meaningful activities can be tricky and depends on many things: current and past interests, eye- hand coordination, vision, cognitive capacities and emotional status. The absence of a computer and your mother's conerns about her appearance, makes "chatting" with others difficult..You might want to inquire within your community about donated computers. Contact your local Parkinson Treatment Centers, support group or social service agency. They may be helpful in that regard. Also, do you know about The Library of Congress Talking Books? They offer recordings of all kinds of literature - and the tapes and the machine are free and are sent to your home. They may also offer music. Contact the Library and they will give you all of the particulars. Is your mom interested in any crafts? Does she have the dexterity and concentration to engage in them - perhaps to donate the product of her efforts to a children's home or charity. Sometimes doing for others can be very therapeutic for the doer - and may enhance her self esteem. While the task doesn't immediately put her in a social situation, it is for others and that may provide a sense of engagement. If you want to give me a few more details re your mother's abilities and disabilities, I may be of some additional help. I am a retired occupational therapist - so the search for meaningful and appropriate activities is something I have spent a great deal of time doing.
