MAINE: House Hurts Stem Cell Research

Friday, November 28, 2003

The state Legislature's decision to drop a plank promoting stem cell research from its economic stimulus bill is bad
for the state's economy, bad for those doomed to struggle with disease and injury and a harsh indictment of a timid
House. This action will do harm to the state's thriving biotechnology industry, which needs stem cells as part of
promising research into tackling Parkinson's Disease and devastating spinal cord injuries. The Senate passed the
measure 37-3 but the House left the measure out of its bill, evidently because Speaker Thomas Finneran didn't like it
and, as usual, no one in the House would stand up to him. If right wing zealots want to deprive thousands of hope
because of their irrational prejudice against stem cell research that is their business. When a branch of the
Legislature is afraid to take them on, that is the voters' business.
