This is old news, but I want to invoke the point Bartholomae (I think) made that no matter how much people speak of writing at school as unreal, the lab reports in Biology, essay in English, and research essay in Psychology due next week are all too real to the students. Because instructors in many disciplines (ourselves included) continue to assign writing (to facilitate learning of the course material, genunine needs to communicate through written language, needs to assess/evaluate, etc.), I think writing in the university is real, like other people have said, as real as writing in the workplace. _____________________________________ Tosh Tachino, M.A., B.A. Honors Ph.D. Student, Iowa State University E-mail: [log in to unmask] http://www.public.iastate.edu/~tosh/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- To leave the list, send a SIGNOFF CASLL command to [log in to unmask] or, if you experience difficulties, write to Russ Hunt at [log in to unmask] For the list archives and information about the organization, its newsletter, and the annual conference, go to http://www.stu.ca/inkshed/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
