I haven't sorted out who is arguing with who on the pharmecutical drug issue,
but can tell you from travel to Scandinavia and a Norwegian foreign exchange
student socialism seems to work very well there because everybody is middle
class. Everybody pays, but everybody gets something.

When my mom and I were in Cayman Islands in 1978 and she got sick they
charged her very little and gave me a hospital room and free food, benefitting from
Britain's socialized medicine. King George III decreed that the Caymans
would never be taxed because they saved people who were shipwrecked instead of
stealing from them. Rather than Pirates of the Caribbean they were

Norman Thomas, a socialist who ran unsuccesssfully for the US Presidency
several times wrote the pledge to the flag, winning a magazine contest (without
"under God" which was added in 1950's when we faced "Godless" communism.)

I think our fears of "socialism" are overblown. We have a "mixed economy"
and I think that modern day "robber barons' or CEOs are doing very well for
themselves. I think, like Teddy Roosevelt and John McCain, the government should
act like a referee and there are some things that it should do and reasonable
drug prices ought to be one thing as well as research for cures for PD and
other awful diseases. Wouldn't cures be cheaper anyway?
