Norman Thomas, a socialist who ran unsuccesssfully for the US Presidency several times wrote the pledge to the flag, winning a magazine contest (without "under God" which was added in 1950's when we faced "Godless" communism.) I think our fears of "socialism" are overblown. We have a "mixed economy" and I think that modern day "robber barons' or CEOs are doing very well for themselves. I think, like Teddy Roosevelt and John McCain, the government should act like a referee and there are some things that it should do and reasonable drug prices ought to be one thing as well as research for cures for PD and other awful diseases. Wouldn't cures be cheaper anyway?
