(1/4/04) WEST ORANGE - Governor McGreevey signed a controversial bill at the Kessler Institute on Pleasant Valley Way
in West Orange on Sunday, allowing embryonic stem cell research in the Garden State. That makes New Jersey only the
second state in the country to enact such a law. California signed a similar bill back in September.

The governor signed the bill with actor Christopher Reeve by his side. Reeve first came to the Kessler Institute for
treatment after a horseback riding accident left him paralyzed. Ever since, the actor has been an outspoken advocate
for stem cell research.

Many of those living with a debilitating disease see this law as offering a chance at a new life. Some experts say the
measure can lead to cures for diseases like Alzheimers and Parkinsons, but there are a number of powerful groups in the
state who feel this kind of research is morally wrong. Some Catholic Church and pro-life supporters call this kind of
research murder. They view it as an act against humanity.

While the bill contains a line prohibiting human cloning, opponents say the bill includes loopholes that could open the
door to cloning. Opponents of the new law say they will be keeping a close eye on the pharmaceutical companies
conducting stem cell research. Some pro-life groups across the state plan to protest the new measure throughout the
next few weeks.
