Gov't to Launch Foundation to Support Dr. Hwang Woo-suk for Nobel Prize
Updated Feb.26,2004 14:37 KST

The government here is strongly recommending Doctor Hwang Woo-suk for a Nobel Prize and plans to set up a foundation to
help the professor win the prestigious award. The Ministry of Science and Technology said Wednesday Doctor Hwang's
success in extracting stem cells from cloned human embryos for the first time in the world is worthy of a Nobel
recognition, adding hopes for Hwang to be the first Korean to secure the lifetime award in science.

Doctor Hwang Woo-suk's scientific breakthrough marks the first step toward growing patients' own replacement cells and
promises to potentially treat a host of incurable diseases such as Parkinson's and diabetes.
