Israel Approves Cloning In Principle
Washington Times, DC

TEL AVIV, Israel, March 5 (UPI) -- Israel's Health Ministry recently decided -- in principle -- to approve cloning of
human embryos for scientific research, Ha'aretz reported.

The decision was taken following a request by Professor Joseph Itskovitz of the Rambam Hospital in Haifa.

The request lacked some necessary data and a committee member told Ha'aretz they have decided "to return the request so
that he could make the amendments, but in principle we decided there was no problem."

Itskovitz reportedly wants to clone embryos for research that would include deriving stem cells. He hopes to discover a
way to make stem cells grow into cells that could be used for therapy. For example, those that produce insulin could be
used to treat diabetes, and new cells could replace damaged neurons in the brains of patients suffering from
Parkinson's disease.
