DELAWARE: House Will Get Briefing Before Taking Up Cloning

Thursday, March 18 , 2004

The House of Representatives held off action Wednesday on a bill that would regulate cloning, opting to hear from both
sides during a briefing later this month.

Senate Bill 55 would ban cloning humans, but it would allow cloning to create stem cells and for agricultural research.

The briefing is scheduled for March 30 at 12:30 p.m. at Legislative Hall.

Many scientists believe stem cells, blank human cells that have not yet specialized, hold the key to curing a number of
illnesses. However, the Catholic Church and right-to-life groups oppose cloning to create stem cells.

Rep. Pam Maier, R-Drummond Hill, said the briefing is needed to let House members hear the issues surrounding the
controversy before the committee acts on recommending the bill.
