John McDonald - The world knows him as Superman's doctor.
In his capacity as head of the Center for Spinal Cord Injuries at Washington University School of Medicine, the
youthful scientist-physician designed an exercise regimen that helped Christopher Reeve regain some movement in his
hips, fingers, wrist and feet seven years after the actor was thrown from a horse and paralyzed below the shoulders.
Such improvement so long after the injury was thought to be impossible. If exercise programs seem rather pedestrian,
McDonald also oversees labs in which the researchers are growing nerve cells. This work could have dramatic
ramifications for people with MS, Parkinson's and ALS, as well as people with spinal cord injuries. McDonald's message -
just because people say it can't be done doesn't mean it can't be done - is something graduates should hear.
