OTTAWA: Parkinson's Awareness Mary McDonald Tuesday, April 13, 2004 Reaching out to people living with Parkinson's was the focus of a special awareness campaign launched at City Hall on Tuesday. Parkinson's is characterized by a slowness of movement and rigidity and normally affects those aged 60 and over. About 7000 Ottawans are currently living with the condition. The disease has gained prominence in recent years through celebrities like Michael J. Fox. But Parkinson Society Ottawa Executive Director Ruth Vant says there still needs to be greater awareness. Over the next two weekends there'll be awareness booths at Place D'Orleans Mall, Carlingwood Shopping Centre and Billings Bridge Plaza. All booths will sell chocolate tulips which are the international symbol of hope for Parkinson's.
